Poaching/Jackaling - Winning Turn Overs
*Please note the law has changed since this video was released*Â
After a tackle, before a ruck is formed, the tackler or another defender has an opportunity to gain possession of the ball from the tackled player.
Key Points for all Poachers
Must release tackled player if the tackler or assisting in the tackle
Must come from onside position through the gate (Old law didn't require tackler to do this; disregard this point in the video.)
Must be on your feet
Must be in contact with ball BEFORE a ruck is formed
Must stay on your feet.
As of 2021, referees have been quicker to award poachers a penalty. Prior to 2021, referees required poachers to survive the ruck. Now referees adjudicate this area more like 7's, where all the poacher needs is the upward movement of an attempt to take the ball from the tackled player.
